Web Sites Advocates For Openly Gay Athlete
Its going to happen
Its going to happen. The question isnt if but when its going to happen.
If the Web site TheLastCloset.org has its way it will happen very soon.
The site wants North Americas major sports leagues to support an openly gay athlete. Theyve asked the commissioners of the National Football League, Major League Baseball, National Basketball Association, National Hockey League, and Major League Soccer to invite gay athletes to come out.
The five contacted commissioners have not responded and they wont. There are still a lot of homophobic people in the United States and the leagues, who are obsessed with their public image, dont want to appear as if theyre promoting homosexuality.
But when it happens theyll be fine with it. Their league will get a lot of media attention and who knows, it might even open up a market that was previously untapped.
With or without an invitation from a commissioner, an openly gay athlete is coming. And this openly gay athlete will be out not because some league asked him to come out. Hell be out because he has the courage, personality, and charisma to pull it off.
I think it will be a baseball player (insert pitcher or catcher joke here) since MLB has historically been on the vanguard of social change.
The NFL is a close second. Not necessarily because theyre so forward-thinking but because they care so much about winning. Theyd sign a purple, two-headed mule if they thought it would help them win.
However, this openly gay athlete will need their leagues support and thats the other thing TheLastCloset.org is trying to accomplish. Theyre making sure the leagues are ready.
The organizations program director, Fawn Yacker, doesnt think the structures are currently in place but she does believe sports leagues are beginning to open a dialogue with the LGBT community.
For example, at a recent NFL owners meeting, GLSEN (Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network) and GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) participated in a discussion on diversity.
Also, members of the San Francisco 49ers participated in a video designed to help LGBT teens who are bullied. And Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe and Baltimore Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo have publically supported Gay marriage to www.FindGayDaddy.com.
The ultimate goal of TheLastCloset.org is to curtail bullying done to LGBT youth. Their logic is if theres an openly gay athlete playing on a major sport team than LGBT youths might not be such frequent targets of bullies.
The Web site belongs to Woman Vision, an organization based in San Francisco.
