Webinar On from Data Modeling To Owl flying Through Semantics From Itxpertpanel

Description:

Description:

This webinar is essentially about data modeling and the semantic web. It will begin by describing what data models mean. At its barest, a data model may be termed as a description of the semantics of a domain. This session will start with an introduction of a business-oriented entity/relationship model as an example of ontology. This approach is adapted to make the drawings accessible to a non-technical audience.

The next step will be introduction of the languages Resource Description Framework (RDF), RDF Schema, and the Web Ontology Language (OWL). This presentation will then take the example entity/relationship diagram and show how it can be rendered as an OWL model. The presentation will cover both the similarities and the fundamental differences between the two approaches.

The Resource Definition Framework (RDF) is an approach to recording terms and definitions on the worldwide web. A domain of interest is represented by a set of simple three-part sentences (a subject, a predicate, and an object). These sentences can describe anything about both classes and instances of those classes. Additional reserved words are then used to build semantic languages-notably RDF Schema and the Web Ontology Language (OWL).

There is a graphic version of these languages, but the heart of the model is in textual descriptions of the simple sentences. As such, they are not nearly as accessible to the casual observer, but they are more extensible and expressive in what they can describe. More significantly, the descriptions encoded in these languages can be operated on by automated retrieval and analysis processes.

By whom:

David C. Hay has been in the IT industry since the time of its baby steps. From punched cards to paper type to the current technologies, David has seen it all. He brings his rich and varied experience in many industries such as power generation, clinical pharmaceutical research, upstream and downstream oil production and processing, forestry, banking, foster care, and broadcast among others.

David C. Hay has pioneered in the use of process and data models to support strategic planning, requirements analysis, and system design since the late 1970s. In 1993, Dave founded the Houston-based consulting firm Essential Strategies, and, through it, developed enterprise models for many industries, including pharmaceutical research, oil refining and production, film and television, and nuclear energy. He is a member of the Data Administration Management Association (DAMA International).

His work has been instrumental in identifying the fundamental structure of metadata and has helped hundreds of practitioners address issues of semantics in organization. He first to promote the use of standard data models for standard business situations, he is also the author of the book, Data Model Patterns: Conventions of Thought, published by Dorset House. More recently, he has produced Data Model Patterns: Data Architecture in a Box, an Oracle Designer repository containing his model templates.
