Situated along the banks of Mt'k'vari River, T'Bilisi is the largest city in and capital of Georgia

. The city was originally known as Tiflis up to 1936, when it was changed to T'Bilisi, which comes from the Georgian T'pilisi that translates to 'warm spring'. The city, which was established in the 5th century, currently covers more than 280 square miles.

The western humid subtropical air masses and eastern dry air masses create a humid subtropical climate in the city, which is characterized by hot summers and cold winters. The coldest month is January, with average temperatures of 0.9 degrees Celsius, while July is the hottest month, when the temperature averages 24.4 degrees Celsius. The coldest month is also the driest, while the wettest is May.

There are several important landmarks in T'Bilisi that make it a great place to visit.

Narikala

Overlooking the city is Narikala, which is an ancient fortress that has two walled sections. Constructed in the 4th century, the fortress was expanded over the years in different dynasties. It original name was 'Shuris-tsikhe' but the Mongols changed it to 'Narin Qala', which means little fortress. An earthquake destroyed parts of the fort. From the remains, you will deduce that the fortress was not really as little as its name shows.

Anchiskhati Basilica

This is the oldest church in the whole country that still survives, dating all the way back to the sixth century. You can clearly determine the antiquity of the overall design. Two abutments that form horseshoe-shaped conches divide the three-span basilica. It was originally made of yellow-stone blocks. However, when it was reconstructed after being damaged, it was largely made of bricks.

T'Bilisi Sioni Cathedral

The Georgians had a tradition of naming their churches after places in the 'Holy Land', which was why this Orthodox cathedral was so named after Mt. Zion. Since there are several other cathedrals with the same name in the country, it is called 'T'Bilisi Sioni' to differentiate it from the others. The original cathedral was built between the sixth and seventh century but has been destroyed and reconstructed several times over the years. It is a good example of medieval Georgian church architecture, and the yellow materials used to build it makes it attractive both during the day and at night.

Another great historic site is the Church of Metekhi that was built in the 13th century. Apart from the historic sites, there are many other interesting places in the city.

There are many cultural landmarks in the city, among of which are the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theatre, the Tbilisi State Conservatoire, Marjanishvili State Academic Theatre, Shota Rustaveli State Academic Theatre and the Sameba Cathedral. The city is also famous for its numerous museums where you can learn a lot about its early history and that of the whole country.

Besides these, T'Bilisi also gives you the opportunity to enjoy sulfur baths and spend some time in beautiful botanical gardens, attractions that sandwich the Narikala fortress. This is an historic city that will give you a deep insight into the past while you still enjoy modern amenities.
