Welcoming Change
April, ornery and temperamental, boasts many blustery damp days, punctuated by an occasional 50+ degree-day drenched in warm sunshine. It is a month of constant change. But, change itself isn't always eagerly embraced. Change in our lives can be exciting andbeneficial or overwhelming and stressful.
I vividly remember in the spring of fifth grade, having to memorize a poem to recite to the entire class. Not being much of a researcher, and at the time, not muchof a public speaker,I asked my mom what we had in the house. I foundone book, a collection of poems by Helen Steiner Rice.I chose the poem, Another Chance.
"How often we wish for another chance
to make a fresh beginning.
A chance to blot out our mistakes
And change failure into winning..."
I was fearful offorgetting the words and of course embarrassing myself, but I made it through. But more importantly, is that the poem has lived within me since then - I can still recite the poem from memory. Its message of new beginnings resonated in my subconscious.
Just like all challenges we have to face, somehow we always find the strength to make it through. So instead of fearing change, why don't we embrace it instead. Why can't we "change failures into winning"? Change brings rebirth---a lost job prompting a new career; a new birth softening thepassing of a loved-one; a natural disasterbringing togethera world communityto rebuild a country.
"It does not take a new day
To make a brand new start,
It only takes a deep desire
To try with all our heart..."
We don't have to wait for change to happen to us. We can be proactive versus reactive. We can choose optimism---to look at all life's experiences as an opportunity to learn and to grow.
"...So never give up in despair
And think that you are through,
For there's always a tomorrow
And the hope of starting new."
---Helen Steiner Rice
Each and every day we have the hope of a new beginning. So when I'm confronted with changes in my life, I recite this poem aloud as a reminder that, again, change can be overwhelming but in the long run extremely beneficial.
