On the next snap, Brown threw to Tyler Urban for a one-yard score. The Mountaineers' Kent Richardson intercepted one of Endres' passes and returned it 47 yards before he fumbled the ball away deep in Huskies territory. Devine answered with the go-ahead scoring run with 2:10 left of the game. UConn marched downfield to the West Virginia 33 before Chris Neild picked off Endres on the fourth down. Brown finally was in sync with his team on their seventh series. He avoided three tacklers before he found Alric Arnett for a 23-yard pass. Brown then hit Jock Sanders on a screen play for a 31-yard pick up. On the following play, Brown ran for a five-yard score.
Connecticut needed just three plays after Frey returned the ensuing kickoff 38 yards to take a 17-14 lead at the break. Endres, who went 25-of-41, hooked up with Moore on a 17-yard TD pass. The crowd of 58,106 gave the Huskies a standing ovation when they ran onto the field. Before the opening kickoff, a moment of silence was held in memory of UConn's Jasper Howard, who was fatally stabbed outside a university-sponsored dance. Players from both the teams wore stickers on their helmets in Howard's memory. Connecticut running back Andre Dixon said he could not stop thinking about Howard throughout the game.
