Westie Training and Facts
Westies are actually known as West Highland White Terriers. They originated in the middle of 19th century in Scotland to control the population of otter, fox, rodents and other animals. They are now primarily a companion pet.
The westies are hardy, spirited, compact and well adjusted. They are one of the popular breed of dogs that are intelligent and equipped with good manners. They are usually playful but can be sometime quiet and determined.
They are energetic and spunky. They are good watch dogs as they alert to danger immediately by barking. They are wonderful family pet which most of the families prefer to have. As they are well going with children and elderly people, they are perfect for having them as a pet. Though they have the tendency to snap when they are too much irritated, they hardly snap children as they get along with them passionately.
They are double coat breed and their coat requires brushing twice in a week. Bathing is strictly forbidden for this breed because they are prone to dry skin. The most probable diseases they are prone to are deafness, luxation, patella and allergies.
For westie training, you should change yourself to cool and polite person if you are short-tempered and cranky by nature. They should be trained from the first day you bring them home as training can get difficult if you train them later on. Be gentle and kind while dealing with them. They respond best to positive approach and gentle guidance. If you become harsh in the process of westie training, then they may become stubborn and difficult to handle.
These dogs are not suitable for apartments as they can get excited so easily. They love to run and explore with their high energy. They need at least an hour of exercise daily to lose their excessive energy. Westie training can be difficult in limited house space. So, you need to have a yard or a garden, properly fenced so that they may not escape to dig somewhere else.
