What About The Peace Talks In Afghanistan?

Many of you may remember that peace talks began some time ago in Afghanistan

. There has been little or no word about what has come out of the talks but we knew from the beginning that progress would be slow and difficult. I believe that the talks will be fruitful because of the fact that all parties have agreed to come to the table. This shows that all parties are tired of the war and are willing to sacrifice some of their goals and ambitions in order to secure the much needed peace.

The fact that the talks have began has been verified even though they are secret. US officials have been downplaying the entire situation but they know that the talks are critical and are hoping for a peaceful outcome.

The US, Afghanistan, and the Taliban have all cooperated in the talks and have met at various times and in various ways. They have even met all at once.

One immediate problem with establishing negotiations is that the Taliban had declared it wouldn't negotiate with Karzai's regime because they consider him to be a puppet of the US Government.

I know that President Karzai had problems before when he attempted to establish a peace initiative with the Taliban but I believe that this time that problem has been resolved. It may still be a sore spot but I believe that all sides have come to some type of compromise that allows them to meet. Karzai is now saying that he has been in contact with senior Taliban officials.

Karzai seems to be optimistic which I can understand because he wants his country to be a unified entity but when I look at the actions of the US I see a very guarded attitude. I dont think that this is because they are not optimistic, I believe that its because they know that if any peace is realiazed in the region the process will be a long hard road.

President Barack Obama declared in June 2011 the United States had largely achieved its goals in Afghanistan and U.S. troops would be withdrawn by 2014, while Leon Panetta has more recently stated that U.S. forces in Afghanistan would step back from a combat role as early as mid-2013.

Karzai told the Journal the Taliban might accept, in the framework of a peace agreement, a deal letting Washington maintain a long-term presence of U.S. troops in Afghanistan, despite Taliban assertions they would continue fighting as long as a single foreign soldier remained on Afghan soil. This is a position that Im sure that the Taliban know that they will have to concede. This is more rhetoric than anything else. I am sure that whatever is being said behind closed doors is much different from any public statements that are being made.

President Karzai knows that the people in Afghanistan need the war to end. He has stated that the Taliban is in the same boat since most of them are Afghan citizens. They have families and relatives that are being affected by the war also. Military Ring Express
