What Are Feight Classes?

When you're shipping something with a Cincinnati delivery service

, you may at some point in time encounter a term known as a "freight class". This is in fact a number or a code that courier companies are going to use to help arrive at the final price that they charge you for making your delivery. If you can understand how freight classes are arrived at, it can give you a better idea of how your deliveries are billed, and can help you predict how much you're going to have to spend on shipping in the future.

The freight class of a delivery is based on several different figures, and then may be adjusted depending on certain special factors. The most basic elements of a freight class are the weight and the size of the shipment. These figures are important for a number of reasons. First, when shipping with a company they are usually combining your order with those from several other clients into a single shipment, and those figures represent the percentage of the total available space in a vehicle that your shipment is consuming. This provides them with the percentage of the total cost of shipping in that vehicle that you should be responsible for.

When you're hiring a vehicle on an FTL basis, this might not seem to apply but it still does. That is because the weight of a shipment also has another important role to play in the total cost the courier company has to face for shipping, which is the fuel mileage. Fuel is one of the highest costs of shipping in large vehicles, and the heavier your shipment is, the more fuel it is going to consumer.

Your freight class will be upgraded if there is anything about your shipment which is going to make it more difficult to transport than a standard delivery of the size and shape of the shipment that you are sending. This includes things like whether or not it is oversized, or if it has been labeled as extremely breakable. Any goods which need to be shipped under specialized conditions, such as being refrigerated, will also be assigned a higher freight class.

The freight class will then be used with other factors like the distance that you are shipping and the speed of shipping that you request to arrive at your final rate. This can help you judge based on past shipping costs what a future shipment will cost you.
