What Are The Different Types Of Cigar Wrappers?
While the filler is certainly one of the most important parts of the cigar
, the wrapper (the outer covering) is no less important. You'll find a very wide array of cigar wrapper types out there, and knowing more about the various versions you'll encounter will help ensure that you get the best smoke for your money every time. What should you now about cigar wrappers?
Oscuro wrappers are the darkest out there, they're black. It takes longer for these wrappers to mature, and they offer a very strong taste. Some cigar smokers will find that oscuro wrappers are just too much for them to handle, but no worries, as there are plenty of others from which to choose. If you are new to the cigar hobby, it's recommended that you not try to start off with an oscuro wrapped cigar. If the oscuro is too harsh, then you might look into a double claro wrapper. This is a light wrapper, actually green in color. They're known for having a slightly sweet taste.
The standard claro wrapper is tan instead of green and is one of the more common cigar wrappers you'll find on the market. They have a mild flavor, which is good for really getting at the flavors in the tobacco without masking it with the taste of the wrapper. A maduro wrapper is a nice middle ground between the claro and the oscuro. These are brown to dark brown in color and have a rich, smooth taste without being harsh or overwhelming.
You will also find the Colorado wrapper, which is brown with red tones. This type of wrapper has a spicier flavor than most others, but is relatively mild at the same time. A Colorado maduro wrapper combines the Colorado and maduro qualities for an interesting blend of characteristics. Finally, there are also Colorado claro wrappers used. These are halfway between a Colorado and a claro, and are sometimes called natural wrappers. This type of wrapper has a medium taste and is usually a medium brown color.
As you can see, there are quite a few different cigar wrappers on the market. You will find that some cigar smokers claim that the wrapper influences the flavor of the cigar most, but many others say it has no effect at all. What you will likely find is that the wrapper does influence the flavor of the cigar, but the tobacco used to fill it will be the strongest influence on the taste you enjoy.
