With the cold weather setting in and winter well on its way, most drivers would be forgiven for thinking that the frosty roads, darker hours and seasonal rush would all add up to create the most dangerous driving conditions of the calendar. But they would be wrong. Surprisingly, the more treacherous the conditions are, the statistically safer the journey is, as drivers will naturally take more care over their journey. Obviously this trend only goes so far though until conditions are genuinely dangerous, with virtually no visibility; but for regular drives, what is the most dangerous time of day to be on the roads?

Recently, Forbes Magazine calculated the most dangerous time of day to drive, using statistics and data collated from AAA's Foundation for Traffic Study and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and the results have been published in order to help drivers make better decisions before they get behind the wheel. Of course, drivers need to consider their own locality first, and also the condition of their vehicle and indeed themselves - had a drink? Not slept well? - but considering all these things to be neutral, the results will no doubt be quite surprising to most drivers.

Saturday is considered to have the highest number of fatalities on the roads of any day of the week, which is probably down to simply more people driving at any one time. During daylight hours, the most accidents occur between 5p.m. and 6p.m, again probably due to drivers travelling home after a long day at work during rush-hour.

However, looking at what is the most dangerous time to drive compared to how much traffic is on the road, the danger level increases as the number of cars decreases. Statistically, between the hours of 2a.m. and 3a.m. are the most dangerous times to drive, especially on a Sunday morning, as this is when the roads are very quiet and largely used by people either going to or coming home from a night out. Add to this reason the fact that it is dark with considerably reduced visibility, plus the false security that drivers get from mistakenly thinking fewer cars means fewer dangers, and a simple drive can become very dangerous. Though getting chips and scratches is probably less likely in big cities, getting a windscreen repair London or any other city is recommended, before a small crack starts to cause a serious problem and reduces your visibility further.

For the same reason, August is apparently the most dangerous month to drive in, as the large amount of daylight hours combined with the fact that many drivers are on their summer holidays, means that a lot of drivers won't feel the sense of caution that they would on an icy road in mid-December.
