What Are Your Training Plans In 2012?
The legal world has always been a competitive one
, and in what is predicted to be a tough year for all businesses, it can quite literally pay to stay one step ahead. One of the best ways to do this is to ensure that the services you offer are as up to date and finely tuned as possible. Diversifying what you have to offer wouldn't hurt your chances of having a bumper 2012 despite warnings of economic gloom, either.
The best way to achieve both of these is undoubtedly by giving your staff extra legal training. Whether it is to sharpen the skills of your veteran solicitors or to increase the scope of your younger team members' abilities and skills, training is an essential way of increasing the value you can offer your clients.
Choosing your legal training.
When planning what training you or your staff will embark on in 2012, its best to have a firm idea about what type of legal training will provide the most benefit. For an increasing number of law firms, personal injury training is a popular choice. It is a rapidly growing area of law in the UK, with many people seeking legal advice and representation following accidents at work, on the roads and in public places.
Once you know what type of training you want to invest in, the next step is finding a suitable training provider. While some providers will offer solely lecture based learning, it may be best to find one that delivers more of an interactive approach, led by legal professionals who have plenty of practical experience in the topic they are teaching.
In-house or out of town?
Another consideration when planning your training for the year is whether you will send your staff to a training centre further afield, or acquire the services of an in-house legal training provider.
Clearly if you find a course out of town that will deliver exceptional benefits then it may be worth going to. But it's important to keep in mind the extra expenses of external training - transportation and accommodation costs for staff to get the training centre, down time away from the office etc.
In-house legal training may be a better solution for some firms who are watching their expenditure this year, and has a number of other benefits. For one thing, many people learn better and take in more of what they are taught when in a familiar environment. Aside from this, some employees may approach in-house training with a more positive attitude because it is more convenient for them and less of a disruption to their normal working day.
Additional benefits of extra legal training.
As well as providing your solicitors with new skills and vital up to date knowledge, extra legal training can have other secondary benefits. It can for instance provide a valuable boost for morale at a time when there is much uncertainty, because it shows that you are willing to invest in them and their future. In-house training days can also be very good for team building, as they provide the chance for employees to interact with each other in different scenarios.
