What Are the 4 Kinds of Fats?

Over the past decade or so many experts have come out against fat, claiming that it is responsible for all evils, that our current obesity epidemic is to be blamed on it, as well as everything. Fat is supposed to make you fat, supposed to give you heart attacks, ruin your cardiovascular system and destroy everything in your body. As a result, food products now proudly display huge signs stating that they are Low Fat' even if they are massively clogged with calories. What is the truth about fat? What has become evident is that not all fats are created equal, and that in fact many fats are better for you than previously thought. As a result we are going to take a look today at the four main kinds of fat, and see which is the best for you to eat and which to avoid.

Let's start off with everybody's main villain: saturated fat. Already I can hear you hissing and pulling back from the screen. Saturated fats are the kind that congeal at room temperature, are solid and white and can be found in animal products. If you have ever seen a steak marbled with thick white lines, than you have seen saturated fat. The only two exceptions to this rule are coconut oil and palm oil, which are also considered to be saturated.

Monosaturated fats are present pretty much everywhere and in all foods that contain fat. These are the oils that are liquid at room temperature like olive oil. Many people have long considered the Mediterranean Diet' to be one of the healthiest in the world, and olive oil is considered to be a crucial part of that. As such, olive oil has received tons of good press, and many people consider it an excellent addition to their diet.

Polyunsaturated fats are the other liquid fat, and these are found primarily in vegetables or on the shelf of your local supermarket as a vegetable oil. People look favorably upon polyunsaturated fats, claiming that they have beneficial effects on our health. These fats come in two groups, known as the omegas', and they are the omega-3's and the omega-6's. The 3's are found primarily in fish, and have become famous as being good for your health, while the intake of omega-6's are much more common and can actually be bad for your health if you don't balance it out with omega-3's.

Finally you have trans-fats, and these are awful and should be avoided as being very harmful to your body.
