The college with the highest paid graduates is Princeton University

. According to 2012 data from PayScale, graduates averaged a starting salary of $58,300 and a mid-career salary of $137,000. However, only 49% of the graduates thought their job was meaningful. Harvey Mudd College was ranked second, with a starting salary of $66,800 and a mid-career salary of $135,000; but 59% of grads thought their job was meaningful. For third-ranked California Institute of Technology starting salary was $67,400, mid-career salary was $127,000 and 58% of grads thought their job was meaningful. Considering we work about 25% of each week, meaningfulness isn't meaningless.

In 2010 a record 19% of American homes had student loan debt. CBS reported that the average loan balance was more than $28,000. That was a 14% increase in just 3 years. However, 10% of families were paying down student loan debt of nearly $62,000. That was $7,000 more than only 3 years earlier. The total U.S. student loan debt was more than $1 trillion; but while this debt is rising appreciably, the average starting salary for college graduates has risen only slightly to $44,259 - and getting "an average starting salary" has become work in itself.

Because of high unemployment, more college students are defaulting on their school loans. According to the Department of Education, of the 4.1 million borrowers who began repaying in late 2009 and early 2010, 9.1% defaulted within 2 years - up from 8.8% the year before. Sixty-six percent of seniors graduating from four-year, non-profit colleges in 2010 had student loan debt; and they defaulted at a rate of 8.3% - up from 5.9% four years earlier. Although default rate dropped at for-profit schools for the first time in 4 years, it was still 12.9%. All this seems to be "default" of a bad economy.

However, there is some good news about schools. As of 2012 the more than 38 million children who get their lunches through the National School Lunch Program are getting more fruits and vegetables, as well as more whole grains and low-fat/no-fat dairy products on their trays. The federal guidelines on what and how much students are served are being phased in gradually over 3 years, with the caloric guidelines capping meals at 850 calories. Although some students grumble about not liking the new foods, children who start kindergarten in 2012 won't "learn" about junk food - at least not at school.
