What Causes Tooth Decay and Cavities?

Cavities are the result of tooth decay, and the destruction of the structure of the tooth is known as tooth decay. Tooth decay can cause problems to both the inner layer of the tooth (dentin) and the outer coating of the tooth (enamel). Tooth decay takes place when foods that contain starches and sugars (carbohydrates) such as candy, cakes, fruits, soda, milk, and breads remain on the tooth area. These foods are digested by bacteria in the mouth and turn them into acids. The saliva, debris of food, acid, and bacteria combine to create a plaque that holds onto the teeth. The plaque acids cause the enamel surface of the teeth to dissolve which develops into hole in the teeth called caries or cavities.

When the gum tissue pulls away from the teeth( recession of gums), most times this is associated with elevated incidences of gum disease ( gingivitis), which can make tooth root vulnerable to plaque. In addition, when a pregnant woman eats sugary foods they can become more at risk of getting cavities.

In older adults, decay that occurs around the area of cavity filing is common. In the past, older adults lack items such as modern preventative tools in dental care and fluoride while growing up which resulted them getting a lot of dental fillings. Over time as the filling weakened, fractures sometimes occur which allow bacteria to build up in the small crevice and causes tooth decay.

What is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment is performed when the dentist feels decay of the tooth will more than likely damage the tooth or already has shown signs that the tooth is already dead. During the procedure, an endodontist or dentist will remove the tooth's center pulp and fill the cavity of the pulp. This procedure can prevent a painful infection from developing in the pulp area which can spread to additional teeth. Root canal treatments are also useful for treating an infection in the abscessed tooth. It can stop infection, relieve toothache, and aid healing.

During the root canal, the dentist will numb the patient's gums with a jelly like substance. Next, the dentist injects into the patient's gums, a local anesthetic which will completely numb the tongue, gums, teeth, and skin in that location. Nitrous oxide gas is sometimes given in order to help the patient relax and reduce pain. A dentist may remove the tooth that is decayed for other teeth with a tiny sheet of rubber that is on a metal frame. This tiny sheet of rubber serves to aid in preventing tooth chips and liquid from coming into the patient's mouth.

Following the root canal treatment a patient's gums and lips may continue to be numb for several hours.
