What Causes Work Related Stress And How To Manage It
Stress at work is becoming a very common condition among many workers in todays business environment
. We are working longer hours and the development of technology has enabled us to produce more information 24 hours a day. These combined with heavier workloads and other commitments are leading to more people being stressed out.
Stress at work is now reaching a level where it is becoming a serious issue for many employers. Absenteeism due to stress related issues is costing many industries millions in lost working days and production. However, many organisations do not take the problem of stress seriously enough. Many consider it as complaining or a lack of commitment.
There are many factors that cause stress such as organisational change, new processes, working with people with different and conflicting approaches to work.
There are many symptoms of stress that can range from aggression, depression, sleep disorders, exhaustion, high blood pressure and headaches. This list is not exhaustive as there are many more physical and emotional symptoms of stress.
If you are under stress at work then you should approach your manager or supervisor and discuss the issue. If your manager is supportive they will be happy to listen to your problem and discuss certain options to find a solution. Certain organisations have stress management courses to help employees overcome their stress. These can involve relaxation techniques and building their inner confidence to cope and deal with stress more effectively. However, if the stress is caused within the workforce due to a result of poor management, poor decision making and business policy then, stress management courses will not solve the problem.
Successful organisations are fully aware that stress can negatively affect productivity and morale among employees. If the root of the problem has to do with business processes or a lack of qualified staff then, successful companies will focus on the root problems and do not waste time dealing with the symptoms.
