What Christening Invitations Are All About

A christening is the religious ceremony that is performed when an infant is baptized

. For many families, this will be one of the first gatherings after the birth of the child. Informing close friends and family members that they are welcome to participate in this momentous occasion is usually handled by choosing, purchasing and mailing out christening invitations.

Christenings usually consist of a religious ceremony that takes place in some house of worship and involves a relatively small group of people. Any attendees will need to receive an invitation well in advance of the event to give them ample time to plan for it. Depending on personal preference, these pieces may be informal and basic or extremely elaborate with elegant details.

Just like any other invitation, the most important pieces of information are the date of the event and the location. If there will be a reception following the ceremony, that information should be included as well. Of course, you want to include the name of the child and the parents' names. Putting the godparents' names on the piece is optional. Choose a phone number for guests to use to RSVP and make sure that also appears on the invitation. If needed, a separate insert can be created with a map to guide guests to the venue.

Most suppliers will let the customer completely customize the invitation. Choices include paper type and color, typeface, print color, graphics, photos, and wording. If the thought of starting from scratch is too daunting, there are plenty of designs to choose from.

For this sacred occasion, something classy is in order. Popular colors for this type of invitation include brown, beige, white, gray and mauve. Regular card stock can be ordered but there are also more expensive choices that are textured. The format is something else that can be selected according to personal preference. Some people prefer a folded card but others are fine with a small card printed only on the front. Some suppliers have cards shaped like various objects including crosses and christening gowns.

Parents may opt to write their own sentiment or have it printed or go with a particular verse or quotation. The invitation may have a photograph that has been provided to the printer or some type of graphic chosen from the available stock.

For the parents that want to go all out, there are fancy options that include embellishments like small jewels, foam figures and embossed letters. These are nice touches, especially if you will be saving a copy of the invitation to mount in a scrapbook or add to a shadow box.

Before the order is placed, the consumer should ask to see several samples of previous work done by the supplier. Comparing prices is important when deciding on a vendor. Make sure that the appropriate size envelopes are included with the purchase of the cards.

Make sure your baby christening is the joyous occasion it was meant to be by sending out elegant christening invitations.
