What Color Highlights Should I Choose For Brown Hair?

. Everyone has a question about coloring their hair at home, and many of you ask, "What color highlights should I choose?"

The most general answer is to pick a highlight color that's not to far away from your base color. That means if you have dark brown hair you wouldn't want to have extra light, high-contrast blond streaks. It would look too shocking and frankly, fake. Someone with dark brown hair would look great with caramel highlights. The idea is to give yourself a little pop of color to jazz things up but not to scare the children.

My advice would be to stay within two, or at most, three, levels above your base color for your highlight choice. Let's say your base color is a light brown, or a Level 6. You could choose highlights in Level 7 or Level 8 or even Level 9. That means your highlights would be either Dark Blond or Medium Blond or Light Blond.

Someone with dark blond hair could lighten their hair with a few well-placed streaks of golden blond or even platinum. The idea is not to lighten your overall hair color, but to make the surface area pop. That's the biggest tip of all when it comes to lightening your dark hair.

Highlights four Levels up from your base color are for the more adventurous and experienced home hair colorist. However, know that with hair color, it's always better to make changes in small increments. You can always go a bit lighter next time. If you follow these guidelines, you'll love the dimension you'll see in your hair.
