What Complications Can Arise During Or After Liposuction?

Liposuction is an increasingly common procedure

, and is routine for many plastic surgeons. However, as with any medical procedure, complications can arise during surgery. Complications can also occur afterward, as a result of the procedure. It is wise to be aware of the risks associated with liposuction, including those related to general anesthesia, local anesthesia, and other medications.

When undergoing lypoplasty, there is going to be a need for some kind of pain killer or anesthesia to be used. While general anesthesia is not needed for every kind of liposuction, it is still widely used. The risk of general anesthesia is relatively low if the following are true: 1) the anesthesia is administered by a board certified anesthesiologist and 2) the procedure is not performed alongside other non-related surgeries or procedures. However, complications can still occur. Too much anesthesia can be administered resulting in an overdose. General anesthesia also impairs breathing and airway blockage, if unnoticed, can result in severe complications.

While general anesthesia is commonly used during liposuction, procedures using only local anesthesia and a vasoconstrictor like epinephrine are becoming more common. There are still risks associated with local anesthesia however. Because a large amount of local anesthesia (typically lidocaine) must be administered, patients can experience some toxicity. If the concentration of lidocaine in the bloodstream exceeds 12 milligrams/liter, serious cardiac toxicity can occur. However, this is highly unlikely, as a surgeon should never administer enough lidocaine to even come close to that concentration. The tumescent technique, which uses only local anesthesia and epinephrine, is known for its unprecedented safety.

Another complication that patients sometimes have is the excessive loss of blood. This is usually due to drugs that are taken beforehand. If drugs that increase bleeding such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or warafin are taken too close to the surgery a hematoma can occur. A hematoma occurs when a large amount of blood gets trapped beneath the skin. Excessive bleeding can also result in hospitalization. Even vitamin E, red wine, and some herbal medicines can cause an increase in bleeding. You want to be careful and aware of what you are taking into your body before any procedure to avoid complications.

Excessive liposuction is also a common complication. This usually occurs when the surgeon attempts to do too much surgery on the same day. Either the surgeon will attempt to remove too much subcutaneous fat from one area, or the surgeon will perform surgery on too many areas of the body in one day. The most common complications that result from this are unattractive skin irregularities, lumpiness, scarring, and an overall dissatisfaction with the result. More serious complications can result in surgical trauma, an extended recovery time, permanent nerve damage, blood clots, or infections.

Many of the complications that can arise from liposuction can be avoided if you prepare yourself well, are aware of the complications, and if you talk to your surgeon beforehand. Infections and complications that can occur afterward can usually be avoided if you follow the surgeon's instruction carefully on how to recover. With any surgical procedure there will be risks, but proper knowledge and care can certainly reduce those risks.
