What Do You Do When The Fight Gets Beyond Guns?
I've had the privilege to work with many police officers and combat veterans
, and boy these guys like to talk about their guns. Since estimates range between 39% and 50% of US households own firearms you probably have at least one friend or coworker who loves to shoot whether it is hunting or target shooting. Most of them see martial arts training as us fun, and when it comes to self defense they think the steel on their hip is all they need. No one can deny the awesome killing power guns have in a close combat situation, but what do you do when they're no longer effective?
There are rifles so powerful that they can pierce body armor and shred flesh and bone at a distance almost impossible to spot with the naked eye. Shotguns and submachine guns eliminate or cut down anything in your way whether you're on the job or making your stand against the bad guys. So you're probably thinking all you need to know when it comes to hand to hand combat is how hit someone with the butt of your weapon. The fact is to be a well rounded warrior you can't just have one specialty and let the rest take care of itself.
Years back an associate of mine interviewed a Marine Corp sniper, and while most of what he said was off the record he made it clear that hand to hand combat was still important. When asked why he simply replied, "Because sometimes they get close." To protect the man's identity I won't go into detail, but he is an accomplished marksmen and martial artist. He'd be the first to pull his weapon, but he also knew that it wasn't the solution to every situation.
If you're on the job you know criminals will test you, because they know you'll be dragged over the coals later. If you're in the military you know shooting isn't always the answer, and you know the worst of the worst hide behind the innocent. Also if you use a gun in self defense be ready to deal with the fallout, because some people see you as the problem. Now this doesn't mean you shouldn't go with your instinct in a bad situation, but give yourself more options.
Learn how to fight off an attacker lunging for your weapon, and then pull your weapon to defend yourself. Know what to do when your weapon jams (anyone who has ever used an M-4 Carbine knows what I'm talking about) or you run out of ammunition. Learn a skill set that will let you fight your way to your gun cabinet or survive in all those places where you can't bring your weapon, but the criminals always do. You might be a great shot, but targets seldom behave as we'd like them to behave. So don't just learn how to shoot straight learn how to fight too, so if a gun battle gets up close and personal you'll be ready. Divide your time between the range and the gym. In the inner circle of the Self Defense Company the majority of us are gun owners, but if we need to we don't need one to be lethal.
