Treadmill Desk - What Is It And Is It Right For You?

Tired of sitting at the computer all day feeling your behind expand

?

There's something new to the market that can help - a treadmill desk.

What is it?

Basically it's a desk that lets you walk on your treadmill while you work - whether at home or at the office. You can read, answer email, surf the net, write reports - basically whatever you need to get done, all while walking.

This isn't 'power-walking', just a slow, gentle 1.0 - 1.5 MPH walk. The benefit is that you burn calories without even noticing it - and gain a lot of health benefits like enhanced mood, disease prevention, increased productivity and, of course, a smaller waist.

Desk treadmills became popular a few years ago when some handyperson took apart their treadmill and built a desk for their computer on top of it.

The problem was that if you wanted a desk on your treadmill you had to build it yourself (which if you're not handy could be a nightmare as it usually required you to take the console off your treadmill, get the proper fitting parts, etc.).

However several companies have recently come out with specialized treadmill desks.

And these are now being used in Fortune 500 companies like Humana and GlaxoSmithKlein. They're also very popular with the work-at-home crowd as you can get all your work done without the weight gain and health problems that often comes with a sedentary laptop lifestyle.

What should you know before buying a desk for your treadmill? Here are a few tips:

#1 As stated above - this is not a 'workout' thing. This is gentle walking. You won't sweat. (Do you sweat when strolling down the mall or walking to the lunchroom at the office?).

You go at a luxuriously slow pace of about 1.0 - 1.5 MPH. And you don't have to walk all day to get the health benefits.

If you did walk for the majority of your work time - you could burn from 800 - 1200 calories per day. That can add up to losing 1 - 2 pounds a week, without starving yourself or slogging it out in the gym.

#2 Get good shoes. While some people with these desks walk in their every day shoes, personally I want the support of a good pair of running shoes. It just makes walking a whole lot more comfortable. And if you're comfortable - you get more work done.

#3 Make sure the desk is height-adjustable. You won't get any use out of a treadmill desk if you don't have proper ergonomics - which will eventually cause strain and injury.

#4 Look for a quiet treadmill - especially if you're in an office.

If you're going to use a treadmill desk in your office, the boss will probably be all for it - but your coworkers may not love you if you have a noisy treadmill. Invest in a quality brand treadmill that runs quiet and smooth.

So those are some things to know before buying a treadmill computer desk.

Note that while their are some commercial treadmill desks starting around $4000 - there is a new product out that you can get for 1 / 10th the price - under $500. For more information see the resource links below.
