What Do the Stairway to Heaven Lyrics Mean?

Pity poor Neil Sedaka. Not only was his follow up to "Oh! Carol" a slight disappointment (it only reached #9 on the Billboard charts) but his song will be forever overshadowed by Led Zeppelin's version of "Stairway to Heaven." Sedaka's Stairway to Heaven lyrics actually precedes the Led Zeppelin version by 11 years, as Sedaka's debuted in 1960, at the height of the doo wop age.

Of course, Sedaka was hardly the first person to exploit the phrase Stairway to Heaven. In fact, the phrase was used prior to even Sedaka's version in 1944's "I'm Building a Stairway to Heaven" by Jack Guthrie. The Lewis Family also recorded their own version of Stairway to Heaven, and to top that, the heavenly stairway became a catchphrase thanks to the 1946 British movie "A Matter of Life and Death", or as it was later renamed for US audiences, "Stairway to Heaven."

Following Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven lyrics, there were even more songs written about the famous stairway, only few of which were covers. Years later, Sedaka's Stairway to Heaven earns points for originality. There is no other doo wop version of Stairway to Heaven; furthermore, the melody is completely original and the lyrics are romantic and pure 1950s (or early 1960s) era.

All of the artists who used this heavenly phrased had very different ideas as to its meaning. For example, Jimmie Page and Robert Plant's point was that a person cannot buy his/her way into heaven. The Lewis Family referred to the stairway with Christian overtones. Neil Sedaka paints a positive image of heaven, the place where surely his beloved girl comes from. He refers to her in his Stairway to Heaven lyrics as his "heavenly angel" and states that he will build a stairway to heaven to reach her if necessary.

You may wonder where the phrase stairway to heaven comes from. It is actually a biblical reference found in Genesis chapter 28. The stairway, also called Jacob's Ladder, is discussed in the passage when Jacob flees from Esau and dreams of a stairway leading to heaven, where presumably there is sanctuary and peace.
