What Does A Dentist Do?

What does it take to become a dentist? And, once you are certified and licensed, what kind of tasks will you be performing? Getting a dental degree is still a bit of a time investment, but typically much less than a regular medical doctor.

Everyone is well aware of how much time it takes to practice medicine as a medical doctor, but some people cannot foresee spending that much time before beginning their career. But, becoming a doctor of dentistry can be just as rewarding with a shorter and more specific education. Becoming a dentist is a great choice for anyone who is interested in the medical field, and also wanting to complete their D.D.S degree within four years. The field of dentistry is so specialized that the whole focus is on oral health and disease. This means that the time it takes to complete your degree is much shorter than a medical doctor, because they have to learn the entire body, whereas a dental student need only learn areas of the mouth. And, while there is a significant amount of biology and chemistry involved, it involves much less education.

So since dental school typically takes four years to complete, anyone can complete their studies and then get their license and start practicing. This is welcome news for those who would like to get into the medical field, but do not want to spend ten years to become a doctor or practice medicine. Of course, in order to be accepted into dental school you must have a bachelor's degree or at least 90 credit hours. And typically you will need to have had some major coursework in biology, health, and chemistry. Plus, good grades are always part of admission into any kind of medical school.

It is always good to know what kind of work you will be doing before embarking on a major career choice. With a degree such as this you, will treat and practice medicine of the mouth and other oral health concerns. Examining patients for tooth decay, gum disease, gingivitis and other oral health concerns is a daily part of this job. Obviously, there is also filling cavities, minor surgical procedures, and extraction of teeth, which are all parts of the job.

There many payoffs in the dental field. Besides, doing a job that you enjoy, usually dentists work in a practice or office of about two or three other doctors of dentistry. This makes for a nice environment and helps one to develop their practice. Yypically they work about four or five days a week, and their salaries are about $160,000.
