What Does A Pyranometer Do?

The word pyranometer comes from the Greek words "pyr

," meaning fire, and "ano," which means sky. Most pyranometers use miniature silicon solar cell detectors (photovoltaic cells) and are relatively inexpensive, costing from $200 upwards as of 2011. These solar cell detectors are normally mounted on a black carbon disk and generate electricity depending on the amount of radiation that falls on them. From this they can measure the amount of insolation. Typically these instruments are used in environmental, agricultural and meteorological monitoring.

A pyranometer is an instrument used by scientists and meteorologists to measure the amount of insolation -- sunlight hitting a horizontal part of the Earth's surface -- at any one time. What they measure is the amount of energy hitting the Earth each second per square meter. Of course, this can be affected by a number of different things, including time of day, the latitude of the place, cloud cover and the air quality. There are various types of Pyranometers.

Thermopile Pyranometer- This type of Pyranometer consists of thermocouple detectors which transform the thermal energy into electric current. These thermocouples are placed on the carbon disks which get activated when sunlight falls on them.

Analog And Digital Solar Radiation recorder- These are two other types of pyranometers with a little difference between the two. Both are made of solar cells and are used to measure the amount of sunlight falling on the surface. They can measure a wavelengths ranging from 300 to 1100 nanometers. Analog Solar Radiation Recorders are widely used for agricultural and environmental monitoring.

But Digital Solar Radiation Recorder is a step ahead of Analog Solar Radiator. It gives accurate measurement and has the capacity to perform in extreme weather conditions ranging from -20 to 70 C.
