What Does Armada Mean

Armada is a Spanish word that means a great fleet of ships

. Usually when people speak of "the Armada," they mean the great Spanish fleet of 1588. In that year the Spanish King Philip decided to invade and conquer England. He gathered together the greatest fleet in history, up to that time. The Armada consisted of 130 warships. It was manned by over 8,000 sailors, and the ships carried almost 2,500 cannon. On board the ships there were almost 20,000 soldiers. The Armada set sail from Spain in May, 1588. A few days later a severe storm forced the Armada to turn back. Repairs were made to the damaged ships and they finally set sail again in the middle of July. The Armada was supposed to meet a Spanish army that was in Belgium at the time. After the meeting, the Armada was supposed to escort barges carrying 35,000 Spanish soldiers across the English Channel. The Armada and the soldiers on the barges were then to invade the English coast. The English made ready to meet the attack. They gathered together 180 ships. These ships were not as large as the Spanish warships, but they were manned by better sailors, and the ships were faster than the Spanish ships. The English also had an army waiting on the coast to defend the country against the Spanish invasion. The Armada was sighted in the English Channel at the end of July, 1588. The English fleet sailed out to meet them. The English opened fire as soon as they got within range of the Spanish Armada. The trained English sailors handled their ships well and the trained English gunners damaged the Spanish ships with cannon fire. The Spanish could not keep up with the faster English ships, and their gunners were not able to aim well enough to hit the English ships. Time after time, the English sailed around and through parts of the Armada. Finally they had to return to English ports for new supplies.
