Becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) can be an excellent career choice for someone who is interested in health care but is not ready or has no intention of becoming a Registered Nurse (RN).

LPN's and LVN's tend to work in hospitals, convalescent centers, nursing homes or even private residences, working with patients who are sick, injured or otherwise incapacitated. They usually work under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. Duties vary, but tend to be of the "hands-on" variety, such as taking patient readings, collecting samples for analysis and assisting the RN with management of the patient's condition.

So what does it take to become an LPN or LVN? Here are the basics:

The Right Personality. Nurses of any sort need to be empathetic, organized, emotionally stable and have good communication skills. They need to be able to deal with criticism from superiors as well as with patients who can sometimes be uncooperative or even outright hostile. Above all, a nursing candidate needs to want to help his/her fellow human beings.

Physical Stamina. Practical and vocational nursing is a physically demanding field. Most LPNs and LVNs work 40hour weeks. They're frequently on their feet and often have to bear heavy loads such as when helping an incapacitated patient move from place to place. A LPN or LVN needs to be in good shape.

Training. To become an LPN/LVN, you need to complete a state-approved training program. These programs are available through a variety of schools, both public and private. Education usually takes about a year and includes both classroom work and practical "hands-on" training. Topics covered during training usually include anatomy, physiology, medical-surgical nursing, pediatrics, obstetrics nursing, pharmacology, nutrition and first aid.

Licensing. Licensing requirements vary by state. However, many default to the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN) given by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. This is a computer-based exam that covers safe and effective care environment, health promotion and maintenance, psychosocial integrity and physiological integrity.

With the right preparation, you can find your way to a health care career that is challenging, rewarding and that can help you make a positive impact on other people's lives.
