What Does a Payroll Service Do?
A small business owner has to wear many hats in running their organization, including handling the complexities of payroll. Depending on the expertise and personality of the company owner, this may be something they love or something that they despise. Whatever their preference, it is a crucial duty that must be done properly and in a timely manner.
If the person running the show has never been great with mathematics, details, and dealing the internal revenue service, he or she will most likely not be a fan of pulling paychecks together.
There are lots of other duties a boss must accomplish, some which may be more compatible with his or her skill set. A small business owner must be multi-talented, however, even without the arithmetic talent. Here are some of the other duties of a small company's owner:
- Hiring and firing: All personnel must be hired and fired by this head honcho. Who works for an organization is an extremely crucial piece of the pie chart. Human service details must be handled with finesse which requires good communication skills, social ability and intuition.
- Developing a quality product or service: A viable small organization must be formed because of a niche which hasn't yet been filled. A high quality product can range from a restaurant meal to a lawnmower and many items in between. Services which are offered up for sale could be hair styling, landscaping or child care. Whatever it is, this head honcho must oversee production.
- Advertising: The goods and services of a company must be advertised in a way that will get the message out to consumers. This is a big responsibility which requires public communication skills and art flair.
- Physical plant: No matter whether it's a factory, day care center or boutique, the boss must make certain that it's clean, attractive and in good repair. This requires organization, maintenance ability and observational skills.
- Financial books and paychecks: The financial books of a small biz must be kept accurately and balanced. Expenses and income needs to be monitored so that the fiscal health of the business stays on track. Payroll must be figured out correctly and distributed to employees in a timely manner.
Does this sound like a bit much for one person? It is. If a business owner decides to hire an accounting service to help out, they will be able to put their energy into the other categories. All other areas will blossom if the tedious pieces are turned over to those more mathematically inclined. What will a payroll service do?
- State and Federal Taxes: Personnel and paycheck records will be kept by the service in order to be able to file state and federal taxes.
- Records of hours: Hours will be accounted for in order to pay the correct amount of money to each employee.
- Withholding rates: Taxes and withholding rates change every year. It's difficult to keep up with if you're one person, but a service that specializes in accounting will always be updating their tax tables.
- Automatic deposits: Automatic deposits save gasoline and paper so is the green thing to do.
- Paychecks: If paper paychecks are preferred, this can be handled by the payroll service, as well.
