What Every Bathroom Needs

Everyone has their favourite room in their house

, and in other peoples' even. For some it's their bedroom and the treat of lying peacefully and reading late on a Sunday morning, for others it's the workshop behind the garage and for a lot of us bathrooms are the only answer. We know we will not be as easily disturbed in our bathrooms as elsewhere. It is actually acceptable to look the bathroom door, to the immense gratitude of mothers worldwide. The bathroom is also, somewhat unfairly I maintain, the only room in the house in which I am officially allowed to sing and singing is recognized to be excellent therapy for harried working moms. Those of us with bathroom addictions have become rather dependant on the rituals we create in these spaces and on the things that simply have to be there to make the experience whole.

Bathrooms need armchairs and not too many people know this. They have to be the old fashioned wingback type and large enough that your bottom half does not feel any larger than it really it is when she put your feet up and in it. Some people think this is very silly as armchairs are for lounges and such while a bathroom is a bathroom. Not so. If the only room in your house in the house where you can have some peace and quiet is the bathroom, the surely you want it to be as comfortable as possible. After all, no one really wants dot spend that much time in the actual bath. Sometimes it is in fact preferable to read without having to get wet and wash at the same time.

Now that we've established that bathrooms are also in fact a kind of wet library it won't be a surprise that the next thing you need is a good collection of books that don't mind the water. Nothing too heavy, literally or metaphorically, as we need to free our hands and minds of any burdens in our bathroom time. Always keep chick magazines for emergencies. These are very helpful on bad days if you turn to the agony aunt columns because, as we all know, sometimes we need to read about other people's problems to feel better. If you find yourself laughing or crying at the letters however, you may need to consider more appropriate therapy.

To weigh or not to weigh is not the question and it never has been. The only question you need worry about is where to put the scales. The answer is the bathroom. No one but you need ever know what you weigh and bathrooms don't talk.

Bathrooms can be a sanctuary and we can make them gorgeous with all sorts of trimmings and tiles. Ultimately though it is what happens in rooms that demine them, so call your kids as well sometimes and get silly with them in the bathroom as they splash in the bath. Bathrooms can be too white or too cold, but they can never have too much laughter.
