There is something that causes an adverse effect in the way that the brain is able to recognize and interpret sound, most importantly the sounds that make up a persons speech.

Children who have auditory processing disorders are not able to differentiate the subtle differences in the way words sound. It doesnt matter if the sounds are louder and clear enough for them to hear. This particular type of problem occurs most often when there is background noise, which is a natural part of just about any listening environment. As a result, children with auditory processing disorder have trouble understanding the way normal speech is presented under anything less than perfect conditions.

How Do You Detect Auditory Processing Disorder?

Most people will think that children with auditory processing disorder are able to hear just like anyone else simply they are able to detect the pure tones when delivered in quiet environments. Anyone who is able to recognize sounds and distinguish between speech in an optimal listening environment is normally not considered to have any hearing troubles.

However, being able to detect sounds is only one of the components for the auditory system. The majority of the time children with auditory processing disorder will not have a loss in their sensitivity, but instead they will have an issue with their hearing because they are not able to process the information normally.

If the problems with the auditory system are not identified from an early age, a lot of these children will end up with delays in their speech and language, and subsequently struggle academically. Symptoms of auditory processing disorder can vary from mild up to severe, as well as encompassing multiple forms. Anytime you feel that your child is having a problem with sounds you need to consider the following:

Auditory processing disorder is commonly misunderstood because a lot of the behaviors associated with it are also associated with other learning disabilities. For example, think about attention deficit disorder and depression. You can see the similarities between the disorders. Although there are a lot of cases where auditory processing disorder is confused with attention deficit disorder, it is actually possible that someone can have both conditions. On the other hand, someone can also have auditory processing disorder along with learning difficulties.
