What First Time Chicken Raisers Should Do
As a first time chicken farmer, there are a lot of things that you should know about
. Even before you start the operation of your chicken farm you should have learned everything you can about chicken farming. Entering into this business entails a lot of hard work and a whole lot of money.
Starting up is the most difficult part but once the business is already in process and the chickens have grown, little maintenance is needed. The benefits are countless, and you can have your own backyard coop even if you are living in the city.
Chickens are good to keep as pets and they help control bugs because they are an essential part of their diet. Aside from this, having a backyard chicken coop can provide you with a constant supply of fresh eggs. There are many things that you should prepare before actually buying the chickens and here are some tips to help you get started.
First and foremost is providing them with a place to stay and retire to at night, namely the chicken coop. This has to be placed in a safe and secure area and it must be protected from too much heat, wind and moisture. Each chicken requires an area of 2-3 square feet to ensure that there is enough room for them. Security is a must since chickens have several natural enemies. Making the coop yourself is possible but if you are inexperienced, it would be better to purchase a ready-made coop or have a professional construct it for you.
Feeding the chickens is also a major concern. They should be provided with a high protein diet especially the hens to help them lay high quality eggs. They should be given whole grains, corn, soy products, greens, shells or bone fragments, grits and salt. A constant supply of fresh clean water must also be provided. When chickens are allowed to roam, they will also find bugs and worms to augment their diet. Just be sure to put the chickens back inside the coop at sundown.
When the eggs are already laid, you will need incubators to help the hen hatch them. Choosing a high quality incubator is preferable over choosing a cheap one. Dont hesitate to ask your family and friends for tips in choosing the right incubator to buy.
You can choose from either the forced air incubator which can hatch more eggs in less time or the still air incubator which needs more of your time and can hatch only a small number of eggs.
