How You Can Find Antique Bottles in Panama

For any antique bottle hunter that has the opportunity to visit the beautiful Country of Panama

, you should be aware that you will be placed within walking distance of one of the two greatest Treasure Routes in the world. These routes that were established by 1530 and paved with cobblestones to create the first trans continental road in the Americas originating at present day Panama City and one terminating on the Caribbean side of the Isthmus at a settlement named Nombre de Dios, a distance of 50 miles.

The second route terminated at a settlement named Los Cruces on the bank of the Rio Chagres, a river that flowed but 18 miles from Panama City, and emptied into the Caribbean Sea, a total of 75 miles from Panama City to the village of Chagres where later would be built Fort San Lorenzo starting in 1597.

One can walk from a paved road, about 200 yards into the beautiful jungle where antique glass and pottery ale fragments can be seen exposed on the surface of the jungle floor. This will require slow progress, but the rewards will be worth it. Why would glass wear be found here? because you are in very close proximity to the original route known as the Panama Las Cruces Route.

Along this route were many "rest stops" located to provide food and drinks to the weary travelers who would discard their liquid containers at or near those rest areas as well as along their traveling way. This traveling was predominantly done on mule back, as was all cargo transported. The present condition of the original cobblestone paving is all but disintegrated, but portions can be found with a probe rod several inches below the surface.

There will be no indication of the actual route due to the re-growth of the jungle since 1855 at which time the Panama Railroad was completed and the route fell into disuse. This one route had been in use by the Spaniards from 1527 thru 1821, then by Panama and the "49ers" until 1855 when the railroad was completed. This means there have been liquid containers scattered along this one route for 325 years. That's a lot of antique bottles.
