What Goes On Inside A Server Room?

Think of a server room as little like a computer room

. Think of it as a place where all the computers are stored as they work throughout the day. Sometimes these rooms have so many things in them that they need to expand. They can expand into different rooms or one big room. This is known as a data centre and it is where lots of computers and servers work together to provide computing power for a business, institution or group of people. A data centre is able to do the same things that a server room does, except for that it can do those things for a lot of people whom are a lot further away. Where a server room may provide computing power or computer memory for the offices above it, a data centre can provide computing power for a whole business estate. In the case of the internet, it can provide memory and services for people on the other side of the planet.

An essential element of each server room is of course, the hardware. The type of hardware you may find in a server room varies but there are server racks and cabinets that are specially made to hold them all. The server room is an area dedicated to the safe keeping and operation of the hardware held within. Some companies stack their servers and hardware on specially designed shelves with a ventilation system that draws out all of the hot air. This is known as data centre cooling and is put in place because server rooms get very hot. If the hardware overheats it does not function as well. In most cases, hardware and associated devices are put in suitable cabinets. Their job is to protect both the physical network hardware and manage the infrastructure. In a server room there may be one or more cabinets and for each one there are multiple servers.

Server rooms are very different small in businesses. They are unable to make a server room and so have to make do with having a data cabinet to hold their servers. In this case, the server(s) are located in one of the premises and is probably in close proximity to the office staff or workers. For a smaller company it is the easiest way possible to provide computing solutions for their company. They will be able to have more advanced and faster computing power to run bigger programs whilst at the same time being able to put their private information under lock and key. One of the biggest benefits of a server rack in the office instead of a server room is the cost. It costs far less to have just one cabinet and a few servers than it does to have lots of them and the smaller company does not need to worry about having a separate room, the extra rents, data centre cooling and the like.

The size and needs of your business or company, your budget and processing needs will dictate whether you need the services of a data centre, server room or data cabinet.
