The lesson is this: Customers don't really care about your reasons for bad customer service
. They just know they got bad service. When dealing with people, make a point to be prompt in your responses to questions/concerns/inquiries and phone calls - or hire someone specifically to handle those tasks for you. Make sure YOUR company isn't dropping the ball on its customers.
