What Is A Military Counter Attack?

The term counter attack is one of those military terms which is self explanatory but it can be a lot more complicated than it sounds

. The definition of a counter attack is a tactic used by a defending force to destroy an enemy force after it has attacked. This is the bottom line and this tactic may require much practice if it is to be executed effectively in actual combat. This is a complicated maneuver and requires precise timing and execution in order to make it work.

This is a strategy which I really like because if it is conducted effectively it can essentially destroy the attacking force. The reason that I like this tactic is because you strike the enemy after he has stretched himself by attacking you. When a boxer or any attacker throws a punch or a blow he by nature leaves an opening because he has extended some force that he could possibly be using to defend himself. There has got to be an opening left somewhere. The successful counter attack exploits that opening by striking into it. The attacker generally stretches himself so that his flank or rear is vulnerable to attack. If you remember the last US attack on Iraq this is the strategy that Saddam Hussein used against attacking US and NATO forces. He withdrew his main forces into Baghdad but used his reserves and other forces to attack the follow on elements of the US attackers. This is the reason why women were captured by the Iraqis. The US policy is not to allow women to serve in front line combat units. If he had sufficient weapons and forces his counter attack would have been successful in cutting off the main US forces from their source of supply.

The smart commander will keep an eye on the attacking force and strike at exactly the right time and place to maximize the effect that he will have on the enemy. He will need to have experience in combat or extensive training in order to make the right decision.

The defending commander will normally leave a small or moderate defending force in place to slow down the enemy attack. If he is smart he will commit his forces in a way that will cause the attacker to attack in an intended direction. For example if there are two different valleys that the attack can come from he will commit more forces in the mouth of the valley that he doesnt want them to come through. This will hopefully push the attacker into the other valley, or down the path of least resistance.

The force which will attack is normally held in reserve which means that they are separated from the initial action. They will have a clear path to attack into the chosen place at the chosen time. They should be ready to move quickly and forcefully into position and rapidly annihilate the attackers where they find them.

If the defenders have done their job they will have weakened and fragmented the attacking force so that it is more vulnerable. It should also be stretched out enough to where the counter attacking force wont have a problem handling the volume of attacking troops with their equipment that it meets. The counter attack normally goes into the flank (side) of the attacking force but it is extremely effective if they can be attacked from the rear.

The counterattacking force must be quick, nimble, violent, and agile to conduct an effective counter attack. Military Ring Express
