What Is Antiperspirant?

What do we really know about antiperspirants? If you're like most people

, you have surely been in the awkward social situation where you are having the time of your life but you realize you are sweating excessively. Sweating is a completely normal thing and everyone does it, but it can be unsightly to see and even more unpleasant to smell. So what to do? Most people use antiperspirant every day to combat the issue of sweat but they don't really know how it works. Here's a few basics on antiperspirants.

Antiperspirant is a type of chemical that stops sweat from happening. Antiperspirants typically look the same as a stick of deodorant, but they are actually very different in terms of they work and affect the body to control sweat. The antiperspirant secret is that when you apply it to the skin, it literally closes up the pores because of the clinical strength chemicals in them so that you do not sweat, at all. Just like the word sounds, it literally stops, or works against perspiration, or sweat. Deodorant is different from antiperspirant because it allows the body to sweat, unlike antiperspirant, but it uses chemicals to cover up and control the unpleasant odor of sweat. For most people, they don't mind sweating, but they don't want it to smell bad. For others, they don't even want to deal with their sweat to begin with. There are actually products on the market that are a combination of deodorant and antiperspirant.

Antiperspirants can be used for people with mild, moderate or severe body sweating issues. For those who suffer from excessive sweat problems, there are clinical strength antiperspirants that can help keep the skin dry and sweating at bay. Antiperspirant could feel like applying a miracle if your life has been seriously affected by excessive sweat and the issues that come with that. Most antiperspirant and deodorant products are meant to be applied to dry skin typically once or twice a day.

Although most people use at least deodorant on a daily basis, some don't realize that their deodorant might actually be a combination of deodorant and antiperspirant. There has been recent debate over the safety of using both types of products, but more specifically over the use of antiperspirants because of the chemicals they contain, that people are exposing their bodies to every day. One of the major components in antiperspirant is aluminum, which in heavy quantities has been linked to serious health issues, including different cancers like breast cancer. Most people would be surprised to learn that something they rub or spray on their skin can having such serious health risks over time, so some groups are advocating teaching about this issue with antiperspirant.

So educate yourself before you make a decision about antiperspirants. If you are going to use one, its good to recognize the difference between using an antiperspirant and using deodorant, as well as using a combination of the two. It may help you sweating, but at the cost of your overall, long-term health. But realize antiperspirant is there to help keep your sweating under control! Antiperspirant can be an awesome thing!
