Ballet is a kind of dancing that tells a story-like a play without words

. This form of dancing is usually performed on a stage, with scenery and costumes. Ballet is more than just dancing with the legs and feet. A ballet dancer's entire body moves gracefully to the music played by the orchestra. The movement of the arms, and even facial expressions, mean much in ballet. The music for a ballet is written to fit the dancing. Sometimes the music is written, and then the dance is made up to go with it. Sometimes the dance comes first and the music is written afterwards. The people who make up the dance are called "choreographers," and the people who make up the music are called "composers." Dance steps are "written down," just as a writer puts his ideas on paper, or a painter paints a picture on paper, or a musician writes a tune on paper. This is called dance notation. The first ballet that was like our ballet of today was performed about 350 years ago in France. It was called "The Comic Ballet of the Queen." It was a big success, and everyone liked it. Many people became interested in this new kind of dancing; but at first they called them "Masques." These were dress-up parties at which everyone wore a mask and costume. In these masques some of the dancers told stories. One famous masque was "Comus," written by the great English poet, John Milton. Because ballet first became popular in France, most of the words we use in talking about ballet are in the French language. A famous composer named Jean Baptiste Lully, who lived in Paris, France, three hundred years ago, had the first school for ballet dancers and musicians, and another man, named Pierre Beauchamp, found there were five basic positions that had to be learned by ballet dancers. These five positions are still the most important parts of ballet, and every ballet dancer must learn them and constantly practice them
