What Is Ericksonian Hypnosis?
Right around the turn of the century a child was born
, afflicted by dyslexia and color blindness. This must have been confusing to the child, as in those early days of medical knowledge, it is likely that few people could have even known of the boy's limitations, much less explained them, or helped him deal with them. What would happen to the young lad in his mid teens would be far worse.
Stricken with the dreaded disease of polio, the lad became paralyzed. In those days, any substantial disfigurement or disability generally led to an early death. Written off by his family as doomed, the boy lingered on in a paralyzed state. As his idle body withered, his mind grew stronger.
He soon learned that with only his will, he could cause his body to react. Soon he had managed to literally will himself to become relatively mobile, an unheard of process even today.
Before he turned 20, he undertook a solo, thousand-mile trip into the wilderness and back by canoe. By the time, he returned home, he was able to walk, albeit with a cane.
This amazing self-induced transformation was accomplished by Milton Erickson. As he continued to survive and flourish, he became so interested in what he had accomplished that he became a self-taught doctor, then a psychotherapist of some renown.
Incredibly, his self-taught skill came from his dedication to the power of his own observations about how people communicated with each other. From that, he extrapolated how they communicated internally to themselves.
He honed these observations into an ability to reach through the social defenses and traits of people in order to reorient their actions by influencing their thoughts. He did this merely by engaging them in conversation. Some would later call this hypnosis, and Erickson himself found no grounds to disagree. As he continued to define and refine his abilities to accomplish behavioral change through subtle influence of people's thoughts, he formulated his thesis on the power of
conversational hypnosis.
He would later in life provide his findings to the medical community, where at first the very idea was roundly scoffed at. However, he used this very practice to convince industry leaders that it was valid, which ironically proved the very validity of it that he postulated in the first place.
As the industry began to embrace it, many uses and styles began to develop and it was used in various treatments to some degree of success. The original style of simply speaking without excessive drama or theatrics became known as
Ericksonian hypnosis. Today there are adherents to this philosophy, and even proponents of the learning and usage of the techniques for purposes of self-promotion.
One enterprising fellow named Ledochowski has gone so far as to create a massive study set of computer discs to enable ordinary people to master the art of its usage. His claim of further revising and increasing the capacity of the principles of Erickson's work has been documented in his products. With a few dollars and a lot of determination and effort, it is said that anyone can learn to exploit hypnosis.
