What Is Ginger Root
Ginger is a spice or a herb which is also known as ginger root
. It has a thin, and light brown peel, and the inside flesh is a yellow color. The root, also known as the rhizome is used in cooking, baking, teas, and has for many centuries been used as a medicine to relieve many common ailments.
Ginger is commercially grown in many warmer regions of the world where the summers are long enough for the root to fully develop. However if you live in a cooler region you can grow ginger root in pots in a greenhouse or in your home.
The fresh root is available year round in the produce section of most grocery stores. You can also buy powdered ginger which is more suitable for baking, as well as pickled and crystallized ginger. However, whenever possible, you should try to choose fresh ginger as it contains more nutrients, and thus it can provide you with more health benefits. When purchasing fresh ginger, look for a root that is firm to touch and has not begun to wilt.
What Does Ginger Contain
Ginger contains volatile oils known as gingerols and shogaols. Raw ginger contains gingerols and when heat is applied, these oils change into shogaols. According to studies both oils have a warming effect, and both give off a pungent taste.
Ginger also contains potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, copper, manganese, zinc and vitamins B6, C and E.

Ginger is easily added to your diet in many different ways. You can sprinkle grated ginger on top of your meat and vegetable dishes as well as in your salad dressing.
Ginger tea is also a very popular way to enjoy the tangy taste of ginger. Tea helps to relieve digestive problems when consumed after a meal.
You can also use ginger to help you to detoxify in your bath tub. Simply grate about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of fresh ginger and add to your hot bath water.
