You hear a lot about hiit cardio all over the internet and in the fitness and healthy

magazines that you can pick up in your grocery stores isles when youre about to check out. What hiit stands for is High Intensity Interval Training and this is what we are going to talk about today.

HIIT cardio is my opinion is one of the best ways for you to completely transform your physique, get in shape and lose pounds of stubborn belly fat. There are many reasons for this but the biggest one is because of the afterburn effect that it has on your bodys metabolism. The afterburn effect is just a fancy way of talking about excess post oxygen consumption levels. You see when you do any type of intense exercise; you basically throw your body out of homeostasis. It doesnt like to be thrown out of homeostasis because then it needs to use resources in order to repair itself. Remember, it wants to survive. It does not care if youre trying to lose belly fat or anything of that nature. So when you throw your body out of a loop, you incur an oxygen debt inside of your body. The easiest way to do this is with any type of interval training such as HIIT cardio. Since you incur and oxygen debt, your body now has to make this debt up and thats what increases your excess post oxygen consumption levels. But the cool thing about this is that your EPOC is positively correlated with metabolism. So when your EPOC levels are raised, your metabolism is raised and you burn a lot more calories at rest. The other cool thing about this phenomenon is that it can last for hours on end. In fact, some studies have reported this effect lasting for up to 36 hours post exercise.

Oh and I almost forgot to mention that these extra calories that your body is burning up from the afterburn effect is from specifically your stubborn body fat. That is one of the big reasons why I really like HIIT cardio for someone who wants to transform their body in the shortest amount of time, get in great shape and lose belly fat.

The reason why I prefer this type of cardio over steady state cardio which is just jogging on a treadmill, elliptical, etc is because with this mode of training, you will burn calories of course during the duration of the workout, but after that, your metabolism drops down to baseline levels. The exercise was not intense enough in order to incur an oxygen debt and raise your metabolism significantly for hours on end. The only way that regular jogging can create the same type of effect is if you are a total beginner with exercise, just starting out, extremely over weight or you do this form of exercise for a long period of time. But even that is not the best way to go about things since the more jogging you do, the more your body will eat up precious muscle tissue and release higher levels of circulating cortisol throughout your body.


Now if you want implement HIIT cardio into your routine, you have plenty of options at your disposal. The easiest way to use this type of exercise is to do some form of interval training on the treadmill. You can do the interval training program that the machine provides such as hills or you can do it manually. I prefer to do it manually where I put the treadmill all the way up to 15 degrees incline and alternate between fast speeds and slow speeds. The fast speeds can last upwards of 1 minute and the slow speeds (recovery part) can last upwards of 2 minutes. It depends on how I feel and how intense the exercise. Another way you can do this is with an elliptical which is perfect for anyone that has any type of lower body modality issues such as bad knees, hips, or feet. Feel free to crank up the incline, the resistance or the pace at which you are moving. Again go for as long as you can then bring the intensity back down to recover.

You can also do HIIT cardio workouts outside, of course weather permitting. You can run sprints, hill sprints, 400s, 200s, 100 meter dashes, it really doesnt matter. Any type of exercise that can get your heart rate up quickly to the point where you need to stop and recover will do the trick.

All in all, HIIT cardio is one of the best ways to get in shape fast and start losing pounds of body fat. It is so simple to implement and provides a variety of ways to train that you can never get bored. It is far better than regular, old, and slow boring cardio and can give you lasting benefits in half the time.
