What Is Ltl Delivery Service?
Once the size of your deliveries progresses beyond single small packages which can
be easily carried by parcel courier services, you have to start making some more complicated decisions regarding how you are going to have your goods transported to their delivery destinations. The option that is utilized by more people than perhaps any other is that of LTL shipping. This is such a common option because it offers both affordable shipping and the most flexibility for the most types of clients. More people fall into an LTL shipping category than into most other areas of shipping.
LTL stands for less than truck load. This means that the goods that you're sending in a given truck will not consume all of the available space. Therefore, the courier company will instead hire out the remaining space in the truck to as many other clients that are shipping in a similar direction as they need to until the truck is full.
The opposite of LTL shipping is FTL which stands for full truck load. This is when you're filling an entire truck's trailer with your cargo. This option is typically only used by people that are shipping over 10,000 lbs worth of cargo, unless they have a specific reason to upgrade from LTL service to FTL, and there are a few reasons to consider that in some situations.
First, LTL is always going to be more affordable. If you're shipping between 100 and 10,000lbs of cargo there is almost never going to be a more affordable way to ship than LTL shipments. However, the shipping time that you get on LTL will rarely match that of an FTL shipment. That is because the delivery company must treat all clients equally, and is going to make the deliveries in the order which is most logical, and which will create the lowest average delivery times for all involved. In FTL shipping, there are only your goods to worry about. That is why some people that are nearing the upper threshold of LTL weight class decide to go for FTL instead.
In many cases, LTL shipping is going to be your only option, which is why it always a good idea to have an excellent LTL courier available. This happens when you're shipping goods too heavy for your parcel carrier to accept, but when you're not nearing that upper threshold which makes paying for FTL service completely out of the question.
