Security awareness means to be aware of the potential danger a companys assets are

liable to when exposed to the bare and dangerous elements of the outside world. Good deal of proactive measures is needed to protect the vital assets of an organization. To achieve this, formal security awareness training is needed, which is actually the need of all the organizations today. Training the staff and key managers is important, at the basic as well as advanced level, not only periodically, but at least once a year.

Creating security awareness involves a variety of measures and steps. One has to remember that there are many ways where the company information or assets could be deliberately stolen, hurt, damaged, or misused. This data could be very integral to a company and misuse of it could create many problems or limitations for the company. So ensuring safe keeping of the resources of the company and protecting its assets is very important and a key agenda for every company. Just devising basic policies and procedures is not enough. Training and creating security awareness among the staff of an organization is also needed.

The training of social awareness should be proactive and ensure long term solving of the companys security issues. For this to happen, the management must be dedicated and be fully involved in computing the procedures, policies and exact schedules of the training program. Normally the head or any main person is kept in charge of the whole proceedings. He is kept informed of all the happenings in the training format and any changes if needed must be brought about under his guidance and approval. Of course, the responsibilities and various roles could be delegated or given to other managers and team workers, but everyone must be held accountable for their specific responsibilities.

The security awareness training programs must be interactive and relevant to the core security issues faced by the company. The awareness training must essentially be designed to educate the users on the appropriate usage, and protection of the resources and assets of a company. But care must also be taken to see that various issues relating to the security of inside information, individual user responsibilities, and ongoing maintenance reports, etc., are also addressed. At the end of the training, the users must be able to protect the confidentiality, integrity, accessibility and availability of the information assets, resources, and core systems. Inappropriate and illegal or unwanted access, use or misuse, disclosure, destruction, modification, alteration or disruption of data in the hands of the outside elements should be avoided and prevented at all costs through the help of the security training.

The awareness programs must lead to long term benefits to the organization. A successful security awareness program should conclude with its users being efficient in spreading enhanced awareness to others too. Increased security levels and improved productivity of the employees and the company as a whole should be attained as well as maintained over a long period of time. The security awareness based training programs must have a fruitful result for all involved.
