With the busy, fast paced life's we live, life can sometimes be overwhelming. This often leads to stress and tension that can have negative side effects on our health. The practice of meditation on a daily basis allows our minds to slow down and become quiet. This helps in the release of tension and stress. The direct result is a happier outlook on life not to mention the many health benefits.

It is best to meditate when you can find a quiet place that does not have a lot of distraction. If you like you can unplug the phone, turn off the computer and create a calm place. This is not necessary, but advised for the beginning meditator.

There are hundreds of different kinds or styles of meditation. The important thing is to pick one and stick with it. Meditation is not a difficult process, it is simply quieting the mind by focusing on an object, sound or word. Gradually the thoughts will diminish and you will come to a state of complete inner silence.

Meditation has also been described as going to a higher state of consciousness. This is very true and advanced meditators can share some amazing stories about the things that have happened to them. As a beginner this is not something you should concern yourself with, but will start getting glimpses of sooner then you think.

The most important thing while meditating is to have no expectations. Simply close your eyes and practice. If you spend twenty minutes sitting with your eyes closed and you feel completely the same after, consider that a good meditation. Expectations on what you want to achieve or feel while meditating tends to block the process of meditation. Have fun with this and try to practice daily.
