What Is Modern Web Design?

Most internet users visit websites without understanding (or even caring) how the sites came to exist

. Every website was originally a basic concept in someone's mind. Moving a site from mental concept to existence on the web is the job of the designer. Website success is measured in number of visitors. The most successful sites combine several strategies to rise above the millions of sites competing for attention. Web design is the process that links the strategies.

Personal sites let individuals express themselves publically. Corporate sites answer questions about the company and provide customer or client access. Commercial sites sell products and services and non-profits clamor for donations or promote their views. Any web site project must start with a clear goal.

Back in the old days - before the World Wide Web - there were many types and brands of computer systems that could not easily communicate with each other. The technology of the web acted like a universal translator and suddenly communication among different systems was easy. Information sharing makes everyone more effective at whatever they do. Web designers make this possible.

There may be a few unsupported computer systems but the technology of the web reaches almost everyone. Any person or organization with an opinion to share or something to sell has a website. Multimillions of sites are competing for attention. Successful websites combine visual impact, interesting content, easy access and simple navigation. A web designer put together the combination that the visitors see.

It always helps when the web designer shares interests with the intended audience. A skateboarding site designed by an auto mechanic will not be attractive to many skateboarders. Shared interests are only one part of a successful website. Since web sites are mostly visual, a designer should have some artistic talent and training in understanding what people are attracted to. While it is disturbing to many, the best example of successful visual appeal is online pornography - the internet's early success champion.

There are certain limitations inherent to websites. Heavy graphic content or large videos can slow down loading speed. Users are impatient and can leave a slow loading site before it is loaded. Website designers have to make compromises between quality visuals and loading speed. Easy navigation between pages on a site is vital.

When a site is intended for a very broad audience, accessibility becomes important. There are blind people using the internet and there are design considerations that make access by visually impaired possible. Designers can (and should) consider providing the site content in the viewer's selected language or in the form most accessible.

Anyone can design a website that matches his/her personal taste. The problem is that very few people agree on what is attractive and interesting. If personal expression is the goal, eclectic design is not bad. If success in the form of millions of visitors is the goal, professional web design is much better. The background functionality of a website is the programmer/developer's domain but designers need to know what is possible and enough programming to communicate the design to the developer for implementation.
