What Is Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal diseases or the gum diseases result mainly due to the improper maintenance of the gum and the teeth on a day-to-day basis
. Similarly to recover from this condition depends, solely, on the way you take care of the teeth.
Causes for periodontitis
Bacteria in the mouth together with food particles and mucous form a plaque on the teeth. If you brush your teeth properly twice a day, the plaque could be removed. When it is not removed immediately, it crystallizes as tartar on the teeth. The tartar could be removed by a qualified dentist alone. When the tartar is not removed in time, inflammation of the gum known as ginvitis occurs. Ginvitis when left untreated assumes the proposition of periodontal diseases where pockets of space are created between the gums and the teeth.
Symptoms of periodontitis
The common symptoms that help you to deduct the bad gum condition include unabated bad breath, swollen and bleeding gums, painful chewing, sensitive teeth and receding gum. The condition gets aggravated by smoking, hormonal changes in girls, diabetes, medications and genetic leads.
Precautions to be taken
You can avoid the condition by taking more care of your teeth. Brushing with fluoride pastes is helpful in controlling the gum diseases. You should employ a dental floss everyday after brushing your teeth to remove any tiny food particle that stays in the teeth even after brushing. Intake of balanced diet helps in maintaining the dental system in a healthy state. And as smoking is injurious even to your gum, you should quit smoking if you are serious about flashing an impressive smile. Finally a scheduled visit to the dentist periodically helps you to get an update on your teeth conditions.
Treatment of periodontitis
The primary aim of the treatment being to control gum infection, the dentist cleans the teeth by undertaking scaling and root planning of the teeth. Thus the bacterial scaling formed at the gum as well as the root are eliminated by the dentist.
As the dental care is not merely a periodic check ups that could be undertaken with the dentist, you have to follow up the care diligently at home daily to permanently avoid the periodontitis.
