What Is Pool Shock?
Perhaps when you purchased your Florida swimming pool
, the company installing it recommended that you shock your pool. Or a friend noticed a strong odor near your pool and recommended pool shock. What is pool shock? And why do you need to shock your swimming pool?
Pool shock doesn't have anything to do with electricity. It means adding special chemicals to the water to remove excess ammonia.
Over time, rainwater carries ammonia into your Florida pool. Ammonia is a chemical from fertilizer, and as ground water evaporates from farm fields, it carries ammonia into the atmosphere where it ends up in water vapor. When it rains, that water vapor is turned into rain drops and carries ammonia right into your pool (among many other places).
People excrete ammonia from their perspiration, saliva and urine. It can even by a by-product shed from sunscreen. Every time someone jumps into the swimming pool for some fun, they're inadvertently shedding ammonia.
"But I use chlorine tables to treat the water," you may be thinking. "Won't that keep the ammonia away? I thought chlorine treated the water."
Chlorine tablets, sticks and powders are great for keeping microorganisms and algae populations down. Unfortunately, it binds with ammonia and creates a compound called chloramine. If you've ever walked near a swimming pool that stinks of "chlorine," what you are actually smelling is chloramine, which has a powerful and unpleasant odor. Don't believe it? The next time you do your laundry, notice how real chlorine bleach smells. It's a very different odor from a swimming pool reeking with chloramine.
Chloramine isn't just smelly; it's unhealthy. When swimmers get red, irritated eyes, they usually blame chlorine, but it's chloramine that's the culprit. Treat the excess chloramine and you've treated the problem. And treating chloramine and excess ammonia is called using pool shock or shocking the swimming pool.
Some people refer to pool shock as "super chlorinating" the pool but as you may imagine, just dumping more of your regular chlorine product into the pool isn't the solution. Adding more chlorine to the water just builds up chloramine levels over time. It can also be costly. A better solution is to invest in pool shock. A special pool shock treatment provides the proper chemicals to treat the pool.
When should you shock your swimming pool? Florida swimming pool owners, who may use their pool for many if not all months of the year, should consult a Florida pool supply company for a pool shock schedule. Typically, pools are shocked once per week; in times of heavy use, they need to be shocked more frequently. If you have any questions about when to shock your pool or what use for pool shock, your Florida pool supplies store can help.
