What Is Respite Care.
If you are caring for someone with an illness like Alzheimers you will know it can
be very hard work and like any difficult job, you need to have a break from the daily routine of looking after the person.
Caring for a person with dementia can be hard role for a carer. It can be just as hard if a carer is a family member. Carers in the family could be a partner, husband, wife, son or daughter.
The caring done by a family member is usually a voluntary agreement carried out because without the help from the family member the person would need to go into a care home or face major issues over their health. If no family member takes on the role as the carer then chances are the person with dementia would have to go into a care facility such as a residential care home or nursing home.
If you or a family member take on the role as carer for the person, then outside help from charitable organisations, social services, or local councils can be given to help the carer have a break from caring for the person in need of care. This kind of third party help is often called respite care.
Most forms of outside help or care support a person receives, enables the individual that provides the care to take a break from their responsibility of somebody who needs the care is available. Help with basic things like washing, cooking and cleaning are all usually available.
You may feel, as the carer, guilty about allowing somebody else to care for the person you are caring for at first. But it is important that you take a break because it is not good for the person you are caring for or yourself if you constantly work without taking a break
Sometimes caring for a family member can be a 7 day a week job, you dont get holidays or weekends off.
Without taking a regular break from the caring role you can make yourself unwell and increase your risk of becoming ill through exhaustion. This could make your life unhappy and very difficult for the person you are caring for.
There are a number of different ways that a carer for a person with an illness could receive respite care. We look at a few of the ways in which a carer could receive help below.
Residential Care Respite care provided by a residential care home is where the person that is being cared for is placed into a care home for a period of time. They stay at the home which provides everything the person may need from the meals to a place to sleep for a set period of time. Usually respite care for a person is provided when the carer goes on holiday or if the carer is unwell and unable to provide the care for a set period of time.
Emergency - Sometimes respite care may need to be provided at short notice, this may be because the carer may be suffering an illness or may be unable to provide the care because of personal circumstances.
Domiciliary care - This kind of respite care is where outside support is provided in the home. This could be help with cleaning, washing, cooking or any other job that is done by the carer in the home of the person with the illness. It could also involve any other task that is usually performed by the carer. Domiciliary care is where help with care is carried out up to a few hours a day.
Day centre - This is where the carer can take the person they are caring for to a day centre during the day, this will allow the carer to have a few hours on their own. A day centre will usually cater for all the needs for the person during their time there. The day centre may also provide services which could include feeding and entertaining the person for the duration of their stay at the day centre.
