What Is Root Canal Treatment And Is It As Bad As People Say
?
For many of us, the idea of visiting the dentist fills us with dread-in particular when we are faced with the possibility of a procedure. One of the most dreaded procedures around is a root canal treatment which brings fear to many due to the pain stigma which is attached to it.
Within our mouths, our teeth have a main set of blood vessels and nerves which are within the centre of each tooth. It is these blood vessels and nerves which create our living tissue called the pulp and the space in which it is situated is referred to as the root canal. The number of root canals a tooth has can depend on how far back the tooth is within the mouth. For example, your front teeth will often have only one root canal, whereas the back teeth may have up to three or even more. In the event that the tooth's pulp becomes damaged, this may result in the death of the blood vessels, which ultimately results in a 'dead' tooth. This death can be as a result of decay, injury or gum diseases, but as this tooth dies, it is vulnerable to infection as it is no longer protected by the body's immune system. If you fail to seek treatment following the death of a tooth, a collection of puss can form at the root of the tip, creating a great deal of pain and swelling to the individual which if left for a prolonged period of time, can also cause damage to the bone surrounding your tooth.
Following the death of a tooth, the ideal treatment is root canal treatment, or endodontics. This form of treatment is a specially designed dental procedure which is aimed towards removing the damaged pulp and bacteria which are causing the infection. The procedure will begin with your dentist giving you an injection of local anaesthetic which will completely block pain from the area which is being treated, without rendering you unconscious. If your tooth is already dead however, you may not require any anaesthetic, but this is something which your dentist will discuss with you. The infected tooth will be separated from the rest of your mouth with the aid of a thin sheet of rubber which will help to keep your tooth dry and protect your airways during the procedure. This also allows your root canal to be cleansed and help to eliminate the possibility of another injection forming. A hole will be made in the top of your tooth and all dead or diseased pulp will be removed through this hole. Your dentist will then clean the empty pulp cavity and in some cases, may even place some medication into this in order to kill off any excess bacteria. In some cases, your treatment may stop here so you may be provided with a temporary filling on your tooth in order to keep it sealed until your next treatment appointment. Alternatively, your dentist may choose to fill the cavity immediately if the infection you sustained has not caused any great damage.
When it comes to facing root canal treatment, many often worry as they believe they will experience a great deal of pain throughout the treatment. In actual fact, when performed by a professionally trained dentist, a patient should experience little to no pain throughout their treatment and the procedure itself should be no more unpleasant than a routine filling. Taking all of this into consideration, root canal treatment is an extremely straightforward procedure. In the event you ever feel uneasy about your looming appointment, never hesitate to ask your hygienist questions. However, never allow your fear to stop you from seeking the treatment you need as you will only experience greater discomfort and potential bone loss.
