What Is Seo?

These days, there are so many acronyms to memorize that it could make your head spin

. One that has been increasing in popularity recently is "SEO", which stands for "Search Engine Optimization". This is the art of designing and marketing a web page in such a manner that it will appear as high as possible in a list of search results from sites like Google, Bing or Yahoo. Numerous companies have sprung up that provide SEO services to a wide variety of clients, including business companies, non-profit organizations, individuals and sole proprietorships.

Search Engine Optimization was once driven primarily by "meta tags". These are bits of information that are inserted into the HTML, or Hyper Text Markup Language, of a web page. They contained such information as the site's title, description and some keywords. These started to be heavily abused by unscrupulous SEO companies. As a result of the decreased value of information stored in meta tags, search engines such as Google, Bing and Yahoo started to devise their own algorithms to rank pages. These algorithms typically do not take meta tags into account at all, so placing meta tags into an HTML document is now usually a fruitless endeavor.

Much search engine optimization work is theoretical, as the source code used to determine how pages are ranked is kept a secret by sites like Google, Bing and Yahoo. SEO companies need to experiment with placement of key words and content on a web page and analyze how it is ranked by search engines. After doing this enough times, these SEO companies are able to identify techniques that result in a more favorable page rank. However, many factors in how a page is ranked are out of the site owner or SEO company's hands. Other factors that can impact how a page ranks in search results include popularity of the page, how long it has existed, what its "up time" percentage is, what language it is in, how much of a social network presence the site has and the popularity of other pages on the same domain.

Before selecting an SEO company to help improve your web pages' rank, ask to see some of their work. Analyze the page's rank before and after it was optimized by that particular company. If an SEO company is not able to demonstrate positive results, you should take your business and web design opportunities elsewhere. Good luck with SEO!
