What Is Serotonin Syndrome? It
Antidepressant medications are combined with therapies to treat people who are diagnosed with heavy depression
. These antidepressant medicines consist of SSRT. This helps in increasing the serotonin level in our brain and controls the mood swings.
Many physicians prescribe SSRT"s as the research have shown that they work efficiently in increasing the serotonin level in the brain, which results in less mood swings. Moreover, it is also believed that SSRT"s tend to cause side effects that is non lethal when compared to other antidepressants. But now it"s been researched and found that even SSRT"s cause a condition that is life threatening, it"s called serotonin syndrome.
Serotonin syndrome is also called as hyperserotonemia. This condition is said to be caused by the presence of increased level of serotonin in the nervous system. The antidepressants that contain SSRT"s produce serotonin through nerve cells in the spinal cord region and brain. This secretion of serotonin helps in maintenance of activities that is carried by the people who are depressed.
Apart from the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, other nerve cells in the body do secrete serotonin which results in regulation in flow of blood, helps in digestion and breathing. The nerve cells tend to secrete more serotonin when people take antidepressants that contain SSRT"s. The secretion of serotonin increases to higher levels when these antidepressants are combined with other medicines.
Serotonin syndrome first occurs when a person starts to take antidepressants for the first time or the dosage of medication he takes is increased. But the major cause for the occurrence of this condition is taking overdose of the antidepressants purposefully.
Apart from the causes mentioned above, serotonin syndrome can also occur when the antidepressant are taken with over the counter medication that normally people take for headache and other body pains. A person can know that he is suffering from serotonin syndrome through serotonin imbalance symptoms. The serotonin imbalance symptoms consist of increased heart rate, agitation, restlessness, fever, shaking and sweating.
So, people who suffer from depression should have control on the antidepressant dosage they take. When they lose control or take excessive antidepressant dosage it results in this condition.
In case if your depression is minor you can also try natural depression cures, vitamin D is considered as one of the best natural cures for depression.
Apart from taking over dosage of antidepressants and combining antidepressants with other medications this syndrome can also be caused by taking banned drugs like cocaine, ecstasy and others. Therefore, people who are addicted to drugs or people who use banned drugs can also end with serotonin syndrome.
