"What is the difference between a long haired and a short haired chihuahua?" The answer to this question is actually very simple. One has a long coat of hair, the other has a short coat of hair. Other than that there is no major difference between them as they are both genetically the same breed.

The only difference in owning either long haired or short haired chihuahua will be grooming. Contrary to what you may believe, a short haired chihuahua will actually shed more hair than a long haired. The short haired chihuahua require regular brushing and weekly grooming. Some owners, including myself, state that a long haired chihuahua will only require monthly brushing and trimming around every two years.

I have a short haired myself and I can tell you that they do in fact shed quite a lot of hair. Sometimes I think to myself how can so much hair come from such a little dog? I have also owned a long haired chihuahua and I never had this problem. This is an easy problem to overcome. I brush my chihuahua outside once a day to rid his excess hair and give him a bath once a month.

Even though they look relatively different to each other, the long haired and short haired chihuahua are both easy to train. There are many people claiming that chihuahua's are a difficult breed to train. I do not agree with this although, chihuahua's are a very intelligent breed and sometimes owners have a tendency to be trained by their chihuahua. I believe that many chihuahua owners are not using the correct chihuahua training and this can lead to some behaviour problems that are very hard to eliminate. The main behaviour problems that a chihuahua will have are excessive barking, biting and nipping, not obeying basic commands and bad potty training habits. These behaviour problems are easy to correct using basic training methods and consistency.

The long haired and short haired chihuahua are a beautiful, intelligent and loving breed and would make a great companion to anybody including families. There is a common belief that a chihuahua is not the best dog to have around small children because of their small size and a tendency for a chihuahua to nip and bite. Socializing your chihuahua with children at a young age is the best way to avoid any biting problems as it is usually a fear of children that will cause a chihuahua to bite or nip them. As for children, educate them on your chihuahua and how easy it would be for an injury to occur.
