? Well that is a commonly asked question and to the everyday onlooker they appear the same, but let's look closer and find out they are really the same or very different. Nail fungus is a type a fungi and thus are commonly found is warm moist environments like: showers, pools, spas and enclosed shoes. Nail fungus belong to a group of special fungi called dermatophytes and these microscopic creatures invade the nail through small openings or through any separations between the nail and the nail bed. Nail fungus is more in toenails than fingers because the toes are often kept in warm, dark, moist environments such as your shoes, perfect conditions for fungi to grow and multiply.
Identifying a nail fungus is very easy. The most notable thing is the color of the infected nail as it will turn a yellow or brown color and become thick and grown over. They may also become brittle, dull and or distorted in size or shape. Nail polish also contributes to the growth of fungi because nail polish prevents the nails from being able to breathe and thus easily become warm and moist.
Athletes foot is also a fungal infection that causes flaking scaling and itching of the foot. Athlete's foot commonly appears as red, peeling, dry skin on areas of one or both soles of the feet. Sometimes the dry flakes spread to the sides and tops of the feet. Most commonly the rash is just on the soles of the feet. This particular fungi is caused by the trichophyton and is spread in moist areas where people walk barefoot in places such as showers. Though this condition normally affects the feet it can spread to other areas of the body as well such as the groin and is called by a different name Tinea cruris or jock itch as it is commonly known. Cracked skin, blisters, and raw tissue may occur causing swelling, inflammation, and pain.
Athletes foot fungus and nail fungus are similar in many ways and more importantly can be treated and cured prevented in the exact same ways. The fungi that cause nail fungus and athletes foot can live on wet towels, shower floors, and footwear as well as spread from person to person, but no need to worry the good news is that prevention is easy and several studies show that keeping good hygiene can cure foot fungus alone 30% to 40% of the time. It is a good idea to keep your feet nice and dry as possible after coming from wet places or heavy exercise, also as much as possible try to prevent sharing linen like: towels, washcloths, ect. Wearing cotton socks will help absorb moisture from the feet and keep the chances of fungal growth down.
